On Sunday around noon when I returned to Hong Kong from Shenzhen via the Huanggang-Lok Ma Chau checkpoint, I was stunned once I stepped out of the building. The compound outside was so full of Hong Kong-bound tourists. After a half-hour navigating over hundreds of suitcases in the direction as indicated by the signage, I came to a dead end.

Officers acted properly in missing girl case, immigration chief says

The immigration chief has defended the department's frontline officers after a 10-year-old girl disappeared after crossing the border at Lo Wu alone last week.

Speaking publicly about the case for the first time, Director of Immigration Lai Tung-kwok said it was impractical to question every child at border checkpoints.

Holidaymakers' exodus keeps checkpoints busy

Tens of thousands of holidaymakers swamped the airport and border checkpoints yesterday to take advantage of the five-day holiday.

The Lok Ma Chau checkpoint is be improved, with an expanded passenger hall and more Customs and immigration counters to cater for a daily average of 35,000 passengers.
