Clay Buchholz allowed two hits in an abbreviated shutout, and the Boston Red Sox got home runs from David Ortiz and Jose Iglesias in a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees that was stopped after 5-1/2 innings because of rain.

Jacoby Ellsbury's double caps off Red Sox comeback

Jacoby Ellsbury hit a game-winning, walk-off double as the Boston Red Sox rallied from four runs down to stun the Cleveland Indians 6-5.

The Red Sox trailed 5-1 in the top of the eighth, but erased the deficit with a run in the bottom of the inning and four more in the ninth.

A man is not feeling well so his doctor tells him to take antibiotics for two weeks, painkillers for three weeks and watch 15 baseball games over the next four weeks and he will be healed. Of course, it is a myth. Sports does not heal, it only distracts. But I have to remind myself of this all the time, particularly when a dose of heavy perspective is served up like the events in Boston.

There was an unseasonable chill this past week blowing across New England down to New York. Baseball weather this was not and the only thing colder than the temperature was the prognosis for the two teams shivering through opening day in Yankee Stadium. By the time the first game of the season between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees finished, the stands were virtually empty.

As a tumultuous and disappointing season draws to a close, the Boston Red Sox are starting to see hopeful signs for the future.

Pedro Ciriaco drove in the tiebreaking run with a two-out double in the ninth inning on Saturday, Cody Ross hit a solo homer and the Red Sox won their second straight, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2.
