Beef products withdrawn from British MPs’ menu

Britain’s House of Commons on Tuesday withdrew four beef products from its canteen menus as tests were carried out for traces of horsemeat, a spokesman said.

Truck driver in fatal accident denies driving dangerously

A truck driver denied yesterday he was driving dangerously when his vehicle caused an accident which resulted in the death of an elderly man.

A truck being driven by Lee Kam-yuen, 58, rammed into the back of a taxi which had stopped at a red light to allow people to cross the road.

Terror as brakes fail on tour bus

A tour bus carrying 29 Indian tourists crashed through a barrier and rolled down a slope into a cargo container in Aberdeen after its brakes failed yesterday. Nine tourists, their guide and the driver were treated at Ruttonjee and Queen Mary hospitals. All were discharged except the driver and a woman, 22, who were in stable condition. The accident occurred on Nam Fung Road at about 4pm.

Park train reopens

The Ocean Express tunnel railway at Ocean Park was allowed to reopen yesterday - but at lower speeds - after an accident on December 6 in which seven passengers were injured.

Trams to get better braking system

An emergency braking system to be installed on Hong Kong's trams next year will improve safety but could mean a sudden jolt for passengers.

The track-brake system - part of a HK$200 million renovation for the public transport system - will reduce the braking distance from 14 metres to 10.5 metres in an emergency.

Corrections & clarifications

The headline 'Look ma, no steering - and no brakes' on page A6 yesterday, and the unattributed quote in the report that the headline was based on, were inaccurate. The prototype design of the electric tram does have brakes, and there are plans to install a computer-controlled steering system and more effective combo-brakes in the final model.

Pit Stop

I guess a Hollywood screenplay couldn't have pitched it better. An Italian driver drafted into the Italian team with a debut at the Italian Grand Prix. Giancarlo Fisichella certainly can't believe his luck. For him, the planets are certainly all aligned.

What do you think of the seaplane proposal?

With regards to H.C. Bee and his letter concerning the seaplane proposal (Talkback, July 16), I would like to draw his attention to the fact that this idea has been around since 1998, when I proposed an idea for seaplanes to the Tourism Board (then the Tourism Authority).

Five injured as car hits LPG station at Sha Tin
