Allan satisfied with overseas shopping trip

NICE to bump into Ivan Allan again yesterday and we're happy to report that he hasn't changed a bit since we saw him last. And our international traveller had certainly been busy.

He was on a buying mission to Newmarket and then skipped across the Irish Sea to attend the record-breaking sales at Goffs last week.

Four riders profit from Kinane's ban

IRISH champion jockey Michael Kinane yesterday lost his appeal against a three-day ban for careless riding but was confirmed to ride Dermot Weld's Diamonds Galore in the International Bowl on April 18.

Kinane's seven rides at today's Gold Cup meeting will go to stand-by riders Brent Thomson, Robert Thompson, John Marshall and Darren Gauci.

Axe falls on three overseas jockeys

THE Hongkong careers of international rider Brent Thomson, New Zealand's Nigel Tiley and Irish-American Declan Murphy will end this season. The trio will fall victim to the Royal Hongkong Jockey Club's three-year rule governing expatriate riders.

WHEN Classic Turbo wore down front-running Echo on Wednesday night it capped an excellent fortnight for Brent Thomson - and left a lot of people feeling pleased for one of racing's nice guys.

With three quick successes after two winless months and a top run from Deerfield in the Classic Trial, the affable New Zealand-born, jet-setting naturalised Australian is hot news again.

Deerfield passes first test

DERBY hopes for troubled star Deerfield flickered back to life yesterday following his first serious test in weeks. The fast-rising star of last year's griffin ranks has had only one run this season and failed in that following an early attack of the virusand an unexplained setback that appeared to defy the vets.
