A brief history of wonder

The picture of Stephen Hawking, immobilised in a wheelchair with his head tilted to one side, has become an iconic image of our time. There has been a lively debate in my office and on the South China Morning Post's editorial page about whether the local media is focusing too much attention on Professor Hawking's disability rather than his phenomenal scientific achievements.

Ah Bun elated to hear physicist

If Ah Bun really could travel back in time, he knows what he would want to do: try to prevent the accident that left him a quadriplegic 15 years ago.

But he knows it is an impossible dream, so he isn't too disappointed that Stephen Hawking, who once theorised it could be possible, has since ruled it out.

Popularity of science books surges ahead of visit by Hawking

Bookshops are starting to stock up on science books to take advantage of the maiden visit to the city of world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking next month.

More readers have been looking for the professor's popular title A Brief History of Time since news of his visit broke about three months ago, stores have reported.
