Brits don't have such a great record

A recent opinion piece by Hugo Restall in the Wall Street Journal caused quite a stir. Headlined 'Hong Kong was better under the British', it details the scandals and controversies of our chief executive race and concludes that the Brits did better at running the city.

Remark unfair to the Brits

I FEEL compelled to reply to D.K. Holland's letter ''Time the Brits faced reality' (South China Morning Post, September 17).

As a self-acknowledged long-time Hong Kong watcher Mr Holland has got it all remarkably wrong. As a Brit basher he appears to have reached a certain standard.

AS a longtime Hong Kong watcher perhaps I could make the following observations on the current expatriate officers furore.

Many, if not all, of the British expatriate workers in Hong Kong have had it easy for years.
