Man charged with murder, wounding

An unemployed man appeared in Kwun Tong Court yesterday on murder and wounding charges. On Wednesday, Ma Kwok-fai, 44, allegedly assaulted Ng Fuk-keung, 56, and Leung Kam-shing, 61, at a walkway at Kin Ming Estate, Tseung Kwan O, after a dispute. Ng died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday and Leung suffered hand injuries. Ma did not enter any plea and was remanded in custody.

Five get suspended jail terms for bribes

Five technicians who gave kickbacks to a fellow worker for introducing them to his employer were spared jail terms yesterday. In the District Court, Ngai Wai-chong, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to offer bribes to Chow Siu-ming, was sentenced to six months' jail, suspended for a year.

Youth unable to recall details of beating

A Form Five pupil says his memory was impaired after he was beaten by five teenagers in Wong Tai Sin. Choi Chi-hung, 16, told the District Court he could not recall details of the attack on January 9 in Morse Park. Ching Pak-sheung, 17, Law Ka-ming, 16, Wu Tang-kit, 17, Kam Kai-wang, 16, and Lam Chun-hong, 15, pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Men accused of attempted HK$1.5m theft

Five men appeared in court for trying to steal nearly HK$1.5 million from a businessman. Taxi drivers Wong Lin-hung and Ip Kam-piu, and unemployed men Poon Siu-wai, Wong Kai-yang and Wong Kwok-leung, aged between 30 and 55, entered no pleas at Eastern Court yesterday. They were charged with conspiring to rob Wong Cheung-ho of HK$1,462,800 from July 17 to August 3.

Leung elected unopposed to top job

Businessman Brain Leung Hung-tak will keep his position as Hong Kong Football Association chairman as he was the only candidate for the top post when the deadline for nominations closed yesterday. All eight positions on the board will be uncontested and the nominees will be confirmed at Saturday's annual general meeting.

First woman assistant police commissioner dies

The police force's first female assistant commissioner, Felicia Wong Leung Kam-shan, 66, died of illness in hospital on March 29, the force's newspaper, Offbeat, reported. Wong joined the force as a probationary inspector in April 1963, and advanced to the rank of assistant commissioner in 1995. She was also regional commander for New Territories North.

Hong Kong's boardsailors off to flier in Bali

Hong Kong's windsurfers got off to a good start in the opening races at the Asian Beach Games in Bali.

Cheng Kwok-fai is in the lead after four races in the men's lightweight mistral - winning the first two races and finishing second in the next two. In the men's RSX, Ho Chi-cho lies second overall, with Chan King-yin fourth.
