Lawyer and fighter for rights Brook Bernacchi dies at 74

Brook Bernacchi, Hong Kong's longest standing and most senior member of the Bar, founder of one of its oldest political groups and one of its longest serving Urban Councillors, has died of a brain tumour at the age of 74.

Traditional grey farewell for 21 Urbco veterans

GO down to the Urban Council, they said, and write us some colour.

Okay. The colour is grey. Not that so much grey was visible.

With the honourable exception of Elsie Tu, most of the natural greys have long since dyed their few remaining strands a youthful black. And even Mrs Tu's curly shock isn't really grey. It's white.

Long-suffering councillor succumbs to tiresome Urbco business

URBAN Council business can be tiresome, as long-time councillor Cecilia Yeung Lai-yin testified yesterday.

As a worthy agenda unfolded before the Liquor Licensing Board, which met at 9 am, the 64-year-old Ms Yeung began with a flurry, asking questions about the applications.

DOZENS of long-serving Urban and Regional Councillors have chosen not to stand in the first full-scale municipal-level elections in March.

Many were elected or appointed in the late 1970s, while some became councillors as far back as the 1950s.

Council's surplus jumps to $979m

THE Urban Council's surplus jumped sixfold to $979 million in the fiscal year 1992-93, according to latest figures.

The sum, up from $158 million the previous year, brought the council's total revenue balance to $1.4 billion - three times the $455 million accumulated in 1991-92.

Complex proposed for Victoria Park

PLANS for building a leisure complex with a central library and a council chamber in Victoria Park have been proposed by Urban Councillor Mr Joseph Chan Yuek-sut.

The plan, which envisaged slicing off a corner of the Victoria Park to accommodate the new chamber and a modern central library for Hongkong Island, is likely to spark heated debate among councillors.

21pc leap in council spending

THE Urban Council is expected to increase its expenditure by 21 per cent to $5.1 billion while maintaining a surplus of $47 million in the coming fiscal year.

Mr Brook Bernacchi, chairman of the council's finance select committee, said staff costs would take up approximately 57 per cent of the budget.
