Opinion divided as Legco chief cuts off filibuster debate on budget bill

Legco president Jasper Tsang Yok-sing ruled yesterday that weeks of filibustering by radical lawmakers to block passage of the budget bill had to end by 1pm today. His decision to axe the debate, however, has sparked controversy over the use of his power.

Contingency plan on agenda for Hong Kong's 'fiscal cliff'

Senior officials from each of the government departments will gather on Thursday to come up with contingency plans for a "fiscal cliff" - a scenario described by Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying after filibustering blocked the passage of the budget bill.

Legco president Jasper Tsang orders end to budget bill filibuster

The president of the Legislative Council on Monday ordered to end a filibuster on the budget bill by Tuesday.

Jasper Tsang Yok-sing ordered that the remaining 131 debates would be merged and ended by Tuesday at 1pm. This would be immediately followed by a vote on each of the amendments.

The budget bill filibuster is set to continue for a 10th day on Monday, after a fruitless meeting between the finance chief and radical lawmakers last night.

Four People Power and League of Social Democrats lawmakers decided to cut short their delaying tactics on the budget bill by making fewer speeches and quorum calls. They called for a meeting with the financial secretary to discuss the budget bill and a universal pension scheme.
