Buena Vista Social Club

Light the way

Spirit of Buena Vista

'In Cuba the music flows like a river,' Ry Cooder wrote in his liner notes to the original 1997 Buena Vista Social Club album.

Embargo on Cubans' cars in Times Square

A lot of preparation is involved in getting big acts to Hong Kong. But what does it take to make 24 Cubans feel at home, especially if the main man in the spotlight is above 70?

Just a little bit of understanding from the government, says Andrew Bull of Arena Hong Kong, who is bringing Ibrahim Ferrer and his entourage to the city to perform on Friday.

Ibrahim Ferrer

When Ry Cooder mentions during the documentary Buena Vista Social Club that Ibrahim Ferrer is like 'Cuba's Nat 'King' Cole' he does Ferrer a disservice. First and foremost, Ferrer is simply Cuba's Ibrahim Ferrer.
