I have a friend who is attending International Christian School and performed in Bugsy Malone at the Hong Kong Youth Arts Festival. He told me that his school did not excuse him from school for several of the performances which conflicted with school days - even though they were having their high school camp on those days. Camp isn't even academic.

Bugsy Malone

This stage adaptation of the Hollywood gangster movie, Bugsy Malone, is one of the highlights of the Youth Arts Festival. Set in 1929 in New York during prohibition, the musical portrays the rivalry between Fat Sam, speakeasy owner and gang leader, and his nemesis Dandy Dan. The 80-strong cast includes Hong Kong performers aged 10 to 25.

Hong Kong's youth say it from the art

Around 800,000 pupils from 500 schools are busily preparing for the tenth celebration of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Festival.

Some are learning lines for the showcase musical Bugsy Malone which opens at the end of next month, others are beavering away at the many visual arts projects due to appear around the city and the rest are taking part in school-based activities.
