On Saturday, Cartier opened its flagship store on the Bund, at a ceremony attended by its chairman, Bernard Fornas, a vice-mayor and stars from the film and fashion world. It follows an exhibition of the company's work at the Shanghai Museum, seen by more than 200,000 visitors. It is Cartier's fifth boutique in China.

Bank mortgages can be a problem

Investors looking to take a stake in a historic property in Shanghai, either for commercial or residential purposes, should be aware of the ground rules.

Generally, the maximum length of a leasehold interest is 50 years, but the length often varies. While the lease for 3 on the Bund was 50 years, that being negotiated for one floor of the former HSBC building is only 15 years.

Shanghai puts heat on the Bund

The lights will go out on the Bund again this summer if the temperature hits 35 degrees Celsius in Shanghai. The city has ordered all 'scenic lighting' turned off to save electricity on hot nights when millions of people turn on their air conditioners.

Big wheel coming to the Bund

Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has been picked from a field of three to build the world's largest Ferris wheel in Shanghai.

It will have a diameter of 170 metres, while the entire structure will be 200 metres high and will provide a viewing platform for both sides of the Huangpu river.
