Safe deposit boxes unopened since 1949 are still being guarded in the subterranean vault of the former Bank of China building on the Bund.

'We are still waiting for the owners to come back,' said staff guarding the huge American-built circular steel vault door.

Bund bids heating up

The race for office space is again heating up on Shanghai's historical Bund, with bidders vying for part of the 155-year-old Pujiang Hotel which houses the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Space constraints have prompted the exchange to build its own 27-storey building in Pudong across the Huangpu River and, despite delays, is expected to move in by the end of this year.

Tens of thousands of people from all walks of life led Shanghai's celebrations on the famous Bund last night to greet the reunification.

Workers, retired teachers, schoolchildren, army personnel, and party officials flanked the Huangpu River to celebrate.

Bund's return to glory given boost by bank

CHINA Merchants Bank (Shanghai) has lent its support to the city's authorities to rebuild the Bund as a financial district by paying US$18.8 million for a historical building.

The bank, part of the China Merchants group, will occupy a five-storey building on Zhongshan Road (East) built in 1924 and owned by Taiwan Bank before the Communist takeover in 1949.

Bund sites to be ready for use next year

THE historic buildings along the famous Bund - including the former headquarters of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp - will be leased or tendered out by next year.

'I think we should be able to lease or tender out all the buildings by next year,' Zhou Jinbao, general manager of the Shanghai Bund Buildings Function Transformation Administration Department, said.

Bund valuations almost set

HONG Kong surveyors C Y Leung & Co and Jones Lang Wootton, appointed to value the historic buildings along Shanghai's famous Bund, are close to completing their assessments.

Another local surveyor, Chung Sen Surveyors, said it had already submitted its valuation report to the Shanghai municipal government.
