Vatican police testifying at the trial of the pope's former butler have told a court they found coded Vatican correspondence in his house alongside documents on which the pope wrote "to be destroyed" in German.

Pope Benedict's former butler, Paolo Gabriele, testified at his Vatican trial yesterday that he was innocent of a theft charge but guilty of abusing the trust of a pope whom he loved like a father.

Gabriele took the stand at his historic trial for stealing secret memos in what he said was a bid to battle "evil and corruption" within the Vatican.

Pope Benedict’s former butler, Paolo Gabriele, went on trial on Saturday for one of the most embarrassing episodes in recent Vatican history.

The trial of the 46-year-old man who served the pope his meals and helped him dress began at 9.30am. (3.30pm HK time) in the Vatican’s little-used tribunal, a small room with rich panelled wood and a papal emblem on its ceiling.
