Museum sends rare stolen statues home

The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art returned two priceless 10th and 11th century Khmer artefacts to Cambodian cultural officials yesterday.

The two statues, exquisitely carved stone Shiva heads from Cambodia's famed Angkor Wat temple complex, were listed as stolen cultural property in a catalogue of 100 missing art objects produced by the International Council of Museums.

FROM the moment I first entered Angkor Wat I found myself awash in stories. At first I was puzzled but looking back now, several months later, it seems that there was something inevitable about it. For Angkor Wat is a monument to the power of the story.
