Late cancellation of cross-country event irks runners

The Hong Kong Amateur Athletics Association was forced to defend itself after a number of competitors complained that it had left it too late to cancel yesterday's Cross Country Championships at Hok Tau.

The event was only called off a 5.30am because of a thunderstorm warning, while typhhon signal number three was also in effect. Some 500 runners were due to take part.

Laws privatisation plan values company at $757m

The controlling family of Laws International Holdings is proposing to privatise the garment-maker at $1.38 a share in cash, valuing it at $757 million. The proposed privatisation would be conducted through a scheme under Section 99 of the Companies Act, the company said. All scheme shares will be cancelled and the stock exchange listing will subsequently be withdrawn.
