Welfare recipients hit hard by inflation have revealed the lengths to which they are going to economise - which include recycling leftover sauce on dinner plates and reusing water.

Surge in price of canned food

The rising cost of raw materials and the exchange rate were blamed yesterday for pushing up the price of canned food. A Consumer Council survey found the average overall price of canned food rose 5.9 per cent in 2005 compared to the previous year, while oriental noodles and bread jumped 3.8 per cent and 3.4 per cent respectively.

Maruha to abandon shipping

Maruha Corp, a Japanese producer of frozen and canned foods, says it will abandon its shipping business on March 31 but the move will not affect its earnings forecast for the year to that date.

Mushroom cloud hangs over food producer

China's largest canned mushroom producer and exporter, Zhangzhou Canned Food Factory, is in trouble after running into an uneven playing field with foreign-funded and township enterprises.

The factory only managed to break even in the past few years although it remains the 'big brother' in the sector. Last year, it had turnover of 140 million yuan (about HK$131 million).

Call for review of lead content in food

DANGEROUS levels of lead found in canned food by Consumer Council tests have led to calls for stricter regulations to prevent food being contaminated.

Although none of the products tested breached local standards, four out of the 104 samples tested contained more lead than would be allowed in Britain.
