Four rescued after sailboats capsize in Lamma Channel

Four sailors were rescued by marine police after they fell into the sea from two sailboats that capsized in gusting winds in East Lamma Channel yesterday.

The one man and three women, aged 21 to 47, were uninjured.

Two boys who were on a sailing course with another who drowned when a dinghy capsized off Stanley told a coroner yesterday they had been given no instructions on how to sail the boat or what to do if it turned over.

Yacht club resumes sail classes after drowning

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has decided to resume its sailing courses, a month after an 11-year-old boy drowned when a training dinghy capsized off Stanley.

In a letter to members and staff following an internal inquiry, the club has also explained the events that led to the death on August 18. It said what had happened arose from 'a unique set of circumstances'.

Canoeists capsized in training exercise

Seven canoeists on a training exercise failed a real-life test yesterday when they were capsized by big waves and could not get back into their craft.

The seven, including four teenaged trainees, were paddling about 100 metres off Lido Beach in Tsuen Wan when they fell into the sea just after 1pm.

Boat sinks

ONE mainland seaman was slightly hurt when a cargo vessel capsized off Stonecutters Island. Crewmen from the Guangzhou-registered Yu Hong were using a crane to move a container on to the Cyprus-registered vessel Trade Hope when their vessel capsized. The man and nine other seamen climbed on to the Trade Hope as their boat went down.

THE friend of a Hong Kong woman who drowned in a boating accident in Bali described herself yesterday as lucky to be alive.

Brenda Chiu Lai-ling, one of nine tourists aboard the capsized vessel, arrived back in the territory still in shock about the accident which killed 28-year-old Ho Siu-yee.

Plan to rescue trapped boy 'thwarted by choppy seas'

A PLAN to rescue a boy trapped in the hull of an overturned boat was scrapped because of choppy conditions, the Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

If successful, the plan would have kept the capsized boat from sinking beneath the water's surface.

Cheng Kin-shing, 15, was trapped inside the fishing boat when the sea rushed in to fill his air pocket.

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy trapped in the hull of an overturned boat drowned after rescue efforts sank the vessel, the coroner's court heard yesterday.

Survivors of the tragedy testified that they knew Cheng Kin-shing was still alive after waves overturned their vessel because they heard him knocking on the bottom of the boat.

MORE than 40 people are feared dead after an overloaded passenger boat capsized in choppy seas off Zhanjiang, Guangdong.

Official reports said yesterday only 26 people were rescued from the privately-run pleasure boat which is understood to have been carrying more than 70 passengers. The others are believed to have drowned.

Suspected smugglers fished out of water

THREE suspected smugglers from the mainland were pulled from the sea yesterday when their high-powered speedboat caught fire while being chased by one of the newly-delivered marine police launches south of Po Toi Island.

The speedboat later capsized, dropping a new left-hand drive Mercedes-Benz into the sea.
