Hong Kong bishop tells of conversation with Pope Francis in Rome

Cardinal John Tong Hon told followers yesterday he spoke with the newly appointed Pope Francis about the plight of Chinese Catholics and pledged that Hong Kong would always serve as a bridge between the Vatican and Catholics on the mainland.

Cardinal John Tong Hon - who is expected to be the first Hong Kong bishop to vote for a pontiff - is unlikely to meet outgoing Pope Benedict before he resigns next week, Tong's deputy said.

The Bishop of Hong Kong, Cardinal John Tong Hon, has expressed thanks to Pope Benedict for his special concern for the church in China. In a statement posted on the website of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Tong briefly remembered his encounters with the Pope after the latter established the Commission for the Catholic Church in China in 2007.
