Doctor tells court of bid to stop bleeding

A surgeon yesterday told an inquest he had tried various means to stop the profuse bleeding suffered by a patient undergoing keyhole surgery at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital.

John Boey was operating to remove non-cancerous growths from the adrenal gland of Ng Keong-ching, a former general manager of Swire Beverages. He said the bleeding became very heavy within two minutes.

Deaths from strokes fall

The number of Hong Kong stroke victims who die from their attacks has fallen significantly, a study found.

Only 14 per cent of stroke victims died this year compared with 24 per cent in 1994.

'People nowadays pay more attention to the importance of healthy diets and medical check-ups. This may explain the drop,' said Dr Richard Kay of the Chinese University.
