Wafer thin

Once upon a time (well, around 1950), there was a noblewoman in Venice who was forbidden by her physician to eat cooked meat. She fled to her favourite eatery and asked the owner, one Giuseppe Cipriani, for help. He took out his freshest beef tenderloin and sliced wafer-thin pieces, then improvised a lemon mayonnaise dressing.

The Cafe de Paris branches in SoHo, Discovery Bay and Stanley are celebrating Bastille Day on Saturday with a special menu. The five-course meal is HK$498 plus 10 per cent service charge. At long last, the Cafe Deco Group's restaurant on the top deck of the Jumbo Floating Restaurant in Aberdeen is about to open - more than a year after we first reported it. Called (appropriately) Top Deck at the Jumbo, the 9,000-square-foot space has a restaurant, bar and al fresco lounge. It can accommodate 300 guests for sit-down meals and up to 700 for cocktail receptions.

The Ritz-Carlton is celebrating its eighth anniversary on August 16 with 'nostalgic menu' meals in Toscana and The Cafe. The menus, comprising the most popular dishes from 1993 - with prices from the same year - are available throughout August. In Toscana, the four-course meal is $488 plus 10 per cent without wine, and $688 including four selected wines.

Aqua has undoubtedly bagged the best pitch on Hollywood Road, its glass-fronted curving facade shining like a beacon amid the twilight gloom. Sit at the bar or reserve a table on the window side of the restaurant to ensure a bird's eye view of the street. We visited on a Monday night and were immediately struck by the friendliness of its service.

Chinamax adds the taste of California

CHINAMAX, the HK$30 million Times Square restaurant, has revamped its gargantuan menu with help from a young Californian chef. John Clark, from the famously trendy Zuni Cafe in San Francisco, has been in Hong Kong creating the kind of Californian food that looks so good it is a shame to eat.
