Blaze prompts call for country park status

The big hill fire that has been sweeping through Castle Peak in Tuen Mun has prompted calls for the area - currently a firing range - to be turned into a country park.

Conservationists say that as most hill fires are man-made, a protected country park area could be better managed with increased ranger patrols and more fire prevention facilities.

Baby found dead in bed after home birth

Police are investigating what happened to a boy pronounced dead 12 hours after his birth in a Tsuen Wan flat.

The mother, 34, gave birth in the bathroom of her second-floor flat in Discovery Park, Castle Peak, at midday on Thursday.

She and the baby were in bed when her husband, a businessman, 42, returned home at 7pm.

A MIDDLE-AGED tattooed man who indecently assaulted a woman, 33, at Nan Shung Centre, Castle Peak, is being sought by police. The victim was taken to Yan Chai hospital.

Nine mainland illegal immigrants were arrested after a police launch intercepted a sampan off Ha Pak Nai, Castle Peak. The two men and seven women, aged between 21 and 40, were believed to have come from Panyu.

Runaways returned

TWO runaway teenagers who escaped from Wai Yee Girls' Home in Castle Peak on Sunday night were found at a friend's flat in Sha Tin. The girls, both 15, were due to be sent to a short-term remand centre following medical checks.

Escape from girls' home played down

SECURITY in children's homes should not be stepped up, social workers said yesterday as the search continued for two runaway teenagers.

Seven girls escaped from the Wai Yee Girls' Home in Castle Peak on Sunday night after a mass breakout.

Four have been returned and another is in Tuen Mun Hospital with a fractured leg after jumping off a three-metre wall.
