When claws are bared on the home front

Living in harmony with two or more cats in your home can be a rewarding experience. But when one feline starts to urinate outside the litter box, it can anger the most loving cat owner and prompt an eviction to the nearest animal shelter.

Abandoned cats swamp Lingnan volunteers

A plea has gone out to pet owners to stop dumping their cats at Lingnan University in Tuen Mun, where volunteers are struggling to take care of more than 100 of them.

Domestic cats do not have the skills to survive outdoors or fight for a place in a colony, volunteer Bill To said. Some have been found dead or with serious injury or illness.

Give cats mental stimulation by recreating the challenges of hunting

Some say cats are known as solitary creatures that only want your attention for their basic needs. The rest of the time, felines are quite happy to laze around and sleep. But do they need more stimulation than getting up to eat and relieve themselves?

Make the right introductions before you bring a second animal into your home

If you have one pet, you might be forgiven for thinking that bringing home another would make them both happy. Instead, many animals feel the opposite and may act aggressively towards each other. Two months ago, Sarah Chow adopted a 13-year old tomcat, Lucky, to join her 11-year old resident male, Puss.

A little homework ensures the fun and games do not turn ugly

Over the years, Teresa Wong has bought numerous toys for her 11-year-old Schnauzer Suki. But what her grey pooch likes best isn't a plaything for dogs. 'I work in the toy industry, so one day I brought home a remote control car,' Wong says. 'Ever since she was little she has loved to play with cars. And the noisier it is the more she seems to love it.'

This week: pets and clothes

The weather has turned rather cold and sour of late. In what is nature's way of preparing for the coming festival, the coldness will bring with it the blooming of cherry blossoms and Chinese daffodils to auspiciously greet the Lunar New Year.

Paws for thought

You may have noticed a porcelain cat with one raised paw at the cash register of local shops and restaurants. These cats are considered symbols of good fortune and are called choy mao ('wealth cat') in Cantonese. They originated in Japan, where they are known as maneki neko ('beckoning cat'), and some examples, dating back to the 18th century, are displayed in museums.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Alistair Cameron, 18

I do like both. Although it would be more a masculine thing to say I'm a dog person, I've mostly had cats in my life. And my football team in Australia are the Geelong Cats ... so I'm definitely a cat person. Cats are warm, cuddly, highly intelligent ... I just wish they could figure out how to play footy.
