Now that the government has caved in to public demands to preserve all of the former Central Government Offices, we must ask why the paths through the site are still closed to the public.

Two dozen people gathered at the gates of the west wing of the former central government offices yesterday dressed as former historic buildings in a quest to stop demolition of the 53-year-old building.

The government may give up its plan to sell part of the historic Government Hill to developers, but it is resolved to redevelop the west wing of its former headquarters.

'Our stance on the west wing of the old Central Government Offices has remained unchanged ... it will be demolished for redevelopment,' a Development Bureau spokesman said yesterday.

Tamar visits dropped after bug alert

Three groups of visitors called off trips to the new Tamar government headquarters this month, despite official pledges that the complex has been thoroughly disinfected after the discovery of potentially fatal bacteria.

The groups dropped their plans to see the new Legislative Council building in Admiralty after the contamination was made known.

West wing is an integral part of hill

It is ironic that the Development Bureau is planning to launch a two-day Heritage Fiesta in December to tie in with an international conference on heritage conservation (also organised by the bureau) when it has announced its revamped plan to sell off virtually the whole of Government Hill to a developer by tender in 2013.

The government's plan to sell off a large area of Government Hill to a private developer shows how shamelessly irresponsible our short-term politicians are regarding heritage conservation.
