In yesterday's front-page story 'Drivers could be spared Eastern crossing toll rise' it was stated that Citic Pacific is the largest shareholder in the Western Harbour Tunnel and that it also has stakes in the Eastern Harbour Tunnel. It should have stated that Citic Pacific is the largest shareholder of the Eastern Harbour Tunnel and also has stakes in the Western Harbour Tunnel.

Store owner severely burned in blast

A grocery store owner, 53, was fighting for his life last night after suffering severe burns in an explosion that occurred when he was examining an electrical switch box in Kwun Tong. He went to check the box in a metre room near his shop on Cha Kwo Ling Road following a power outage in his store. He suffered serious burns to his head and body, and yelled for help.

Woman's body found in water off Kwun Tong

Police are investigating the identity of a woman who was found dead in the sea off Kwun Tong. The woman, wearing pyjamas and aged 30 to 40, was found floating in the water by a worker in the Cha Kwo Ling public cargo area at about 1.20pm. She was confirmed dead at the scene but no identity documents were found. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Truck driver held in death of cyclist

A truck driver was arrested in connection with the death of a cyclist in a hit-and-run accident near Yau Tong yesterday.

The cyclist, 49, sustained serious head injuries and died at the scene at 2pm, police said.

The light goods vehicle left the scene at Cha Kwo Ling Road after the crash and continued travelling eastwards.

Driver hurt in harbour plunge

A 39-year-old driver was injured when his container truck plunged into the sea at Cha Kwo Ling Public Cargo Working Area in Kwun Tong shortly before 9am yesterday. A police spokesman said officers believed the driver had probably misjudged the distance to the waterfront. The driver freed himself from his flooded cabin and was rescued from the water by firemen.

Slow lane

A slow-moving convoy of vehicles approaches the Kowloon side of the Eastern Harbour Tunnel yesterday during a protest organised by lawmaker Lau Kong-wah against plans to increase tolls by up to 67 per cent. The motorists set out yesterday morning from Yau Tong, proceeding slowly to the tunnel entrance while sounding their horns along the route.
