Fireman in court for spanner attack

A fireman lashed out with a spanner when he thought his girlfriend had been insulted. Chan Wai-keung, 22, agreed to be bound over for two years at $2,000.

Eastern Court heard Chan went to his girlfriend's workplace in Times Square, Causeway Bay, on December 4 and hit Wan Kin-yip, 21, giving him a bruise.

$8.4m offer to prevent strike

AN $8.4 million payout was offered by the Government yesterday to prevent strike action by lecturers from technical institutes.

Officials denied the payment offered to the academics was in response to the threatened industrial action but said the offer followed a study of their claim.
