Cheers

Three cheers for perfect Purton

Zac Purton continued his phenomenal recent form, riding the tricky 'C+3' course to perfection at Happy Valley last night, grabbing a treble and consolidating second spot in the Jockeys' Championship.

Cash in on Ng's Elephant Cheers

Punters will doubtless pin their hopes to Crown Witness in tonight's Cricket Club Valley Stakes (1,650m) at Happy Valley, but the Gary Ng Ting-keung stable is in great form and offers a better value option for punters with Elephant Cheers.

Eager actress not ready to go the full distance

Celebrities were thin on the ground this year - a rare thing for any gathering in Hong Kong where cameras are sure to be clicking away - but actress Annie Liu Hsin-you was happy to fly the flag for the city's more artistically inclined.

Cheers at last

After an unbelievable delay of more than four months (think government licensing), the little bar formerly known as Phi-B, which is now called Yumla, is finally opening its doors tonight.

'It has been so long, I cannot even remember how many months we've been delayed,' says Yumla's managing director, Phil Murphy, lamenting: 'We were meant to open on June 1.'

Saint-Martin in the good books with impeccable three-timer

Eric Saint-Martin, on a 'show cause' mission to secure his place in the riding ranks, was on his best behaviour last night as he continued his good start to the season with a sparkling treble. At his best, the Frenchman has few equals and he proved the point with superlative rides from tricky barriers aboard Wise Choice, Joyous Cheers and Splendid Patrol.

Cheers as the Whites come top

There was a chorus of cheers as the annual sports day organised by Chong Gene Hang College got off to a roaring start at the command: 'On your marks, get set, go!'

Scale-back of complex plan sensible

Three cheers for the Government for considering scaling back the proposed sports and shopping complex in Stanley.

The complex would have been massive. It would have also overwhelmed Stanley's open-air markets and destroyed the area's distinct charm and character as a tourist attraction.

Still waiting for final episode

Since ATV World changed its programme format, Pearl has been reducing its number of popular US sitcoms.

I am not sure if Pearl is going to show Friends, Seinfeld, Veronica's Closet, The Nanny and Frasier anymore (Frasier has been off the air for more than a year).

Best can rise to Challenge

Hat-trick hunting Best Of The Best can start the New Year on a bright note for trainer Wong Tang-ping and confirm his status as one of the rising stars of local racing.

Best Of The Best was a quality griffin from last season but, in his first tough campaign in open company, has excelled and the sheer fluency of his past two wins suggests that he is destined for the heights.

Raise your Cup to Ho

Happy Valley specialist Cheers Again can take the featured Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Cup at a rare day meeting at the city track this afternoon.

As the countdown carries on for next Sunday's International Races renewal, there is the prospect of some tight racing in several events on today's nine-race card and the trophy event looks open.

Catch that Winning Fever

Trainer David Hill can add another piece of silverware to the sideboard when his promising Winning Fever tackles the Japan Racing Association Trophy (JRA) at Sha Tin today.

Moore works Magic of the equine kind

It has been flood or famine for John Moore so far this season.

With all three of the trainer's winners coming at the one meeting, there have been a couple of disappointing days for supporters of the stable.

But trackwork yesterday suggested better times are in store with the smart Master Magic leading the way.

Good Spirit's sprint a hint of things to come

Favourite-backers will have left Sha Tin on good terms with themselves on Saturday, but with Scrooge-like dividends throughout the afternoon there was precious little to excite the value-conscious punter.

And in the same vein, while there were plenty of solid efforts, the nine-race card lacked a truly outstanding performance to get the pulse racing with expectation.

Hayes asked to work his magic on disappointing Cheers Up

Costly flop Cheers Up has moved to crack Australian trainer David Hayes in a bid by owner Lui Siu-man to recoup some of the $3 million outlay for the disappointing son of Irish River.

Bang into wrong slot

Maybe I am missing the point. I thought television companies aimed to attract as many viewers as possible by scheduling programmes at times when they were most likely to attract the largest audience.

I thought that achieving 90 per cent-plus audience shares was the intention.

It appears I am wrong.

At least I think I must be.
