Hong Kong Airport Authority to launch study into fourth runway

Hong Kong must face the question of whether a fourth airport runway will be needed by 2030, in a new strategic study, the transport minister said on Monday.

Now we have it - figures showing that our container port (container ports one to nine) did 14.6 million teus ("20-foot equivalent units") in the first 10 months of 2012 ("HK set to lose No 3 port rank to Shenzhen", November 26).

The full-year estimate is probably some 17.6 million teus.

Bomb hoax grounds plane for two hours

A bomb scare grounded a plane for two hours at Chek Lap Kok airport yesterday. Passengers were evacuated from Shanghai-bound China Eastern Airlines flight MU502 after it was halted on the runway at 12.30pm. Nothing suspicious was found and it left at 2.45pm. It was believed to have been a hoax call.

Horses have smooth ride into the city

Heavy security was in place at both the Olympic venues and the hotel where riders will stay in Sha Tin as the first batch of horses arrived yesterday.

The 13 horses, from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, arrived at Chek Lap Kok airport at about 8.30am. They were taken to the Sha Tin equestrian venue under police escort.

Hottest day of year but relief on the way

Hong Kong had its hottest day of the year yesterday, but there is some relief ahead, the Observatory said.

The temperature topped 34.8 degrees Celsius yesterday afternoon in Central, but was higher in the New Territories where the mercury rose to 36.2 degrees at Sheung Shui and 35.4 degrees at Chek Lap Kok airport.

A friend from Singapore recently visited me in Hong Kong. She first visited in about 1993 and has been here several times since. On her latest trip, she went out of her way to say how much she thought Hong Kong had changed - for the better. Emergency landing for cargo plane

Fire and ambulance crews went on full alert at Chek Lap Kok airport when a cargo plane made an emergency landing yesterday. The pilot of the fully laden Boeing 747 reported a suspected burst tyre after taking off from Shanghai to fly to Astana in Kazakhstan.
