A visit to America by a rising star in the People's Liberation Army, amid increased tensions between China and its neighbours over territorial disputes in the East China and South China seas, is likely to herald his further promotion.

U.S. forces' chief visits sensitive P.L.A. bases

The top US military official, Admiral Mike Mullen, wrapped up his four-day visit to China yesterday by having a glimpse of a submarine base of the East China Sea Fleet before heading to Seoul.

And in a move that analysts identified as a sign that China has taken steps to improve its military transparency, Mullen was taken to some sensitive military facilities during his trip.
