'The Cheng' was missing, but despite the absence of the vaunted vault manoeuvre, the mainland's top gymnasts still thrilled the crowd of 12,000 at Hong Kong Coliseum with their exhibition yesterday.

We'll take extra measures to ensure our safety, says Cheng

China's top gymnasts are much more aware of the serious injury hazards the sport poses following the broken neck suffered by a competitor at the national championships, according to Olympic hope Cheng Fei.

Cheng said yesterday she and her teammates were more concerned than in the past about safety measures, in competition and practice.

Solo Ching came close at the Auckland Games but fell off the balance beam in the qualifying rounds, something she hadn't done before in an international competition.
