Women's jails will stay crowded for years

Overcrowding in Hong Kong's packed women's prisons is likely to continue for years until it is eased by redevelopment of ageing jails.

Correctional Services Department figures show that the occupancy rate at the territory's six female prisons last year topped 118.9 per cent, with one, the Tai Lam Centre for Women, holding 473 inmates despite being designed for 263.

Water cut sends island into panic

Residents and holidaymakers on Cheung Chau were shocked yesterday when the fresh water supply to the island was cut by a burst main and no information was given on when it was likely to be restored.

News of the cut led to an exodus of tourists, while residents of the island flocked to shops for bottled water.

At least three ferry operators have expressed interest in operating passenger services between Cheung Chau and a remote drug rehabilitation centre on Lantau Island, the Transport Department has confirmed.

Map route leads cyclists on treacherous journey

On Sunday, May 12, my husband and I ventured to Lantau to cycle along the track south from Mui Wo to Chi Ma Wan. It is clearly marked in the legend on the Lantau Island Countryside series map as a Country Park bicycle track.

Penalised for living in South Lantau

Lantau Island is picturesque, scenic and largely unspoiled by any commercial development that can be seen in most areas of Hong Kong.

As part of the Government's action plan to ensure that this remains the case, a closed-road system is in place, allowing only residents to drive on the South Lantau Road.

Girl drowns as boat overturns

A girl of 13 drowned yesterday after a boat capsized in a busy sea channel off Lantau.

The youngster, Yuen Wai-ho, fell from the 12-metre motor cargo vessel as it toppled, possibly due to the wake of a passing high-speed ferry.

Fire service divers rescued her mother by drilling through the boat's hull.

Briton held over murders

A Briton has been arrested in connection with the murders of karaoke bar hostesses, police said yesterday.

Police detained the 27-year-old Hong Kong-born suspect in a Mongkok brothel on Thursday night.

The police described the man as a 'gweilo'.

They said he spoke fluent Cantonese and English, and worked in the brothel.
