Fire at Thai refugee camp on Myanmar border leaves 30 dead

Thirty people were killed and about 200 injured yesterday when a fire broke out in a camp in northern Thailand housing refugees from neighbouring Myanmar, Thai officials said. Many of the victims were believed to be women and children.

Opium hidden in wooden carvings, drums

Customs has seized 45kg of opium hidden in wooden carvings and drums in express cargoes bound from Thailand to the United States, the first discovery in Hong Kong of this mode of drug smuggling. Officers at the airport found the drug in two hauls, both from Chiang Mai and destined for California. The opium was estimated to be worth HK$11.7 million.
