Choosing positivity

Last week I met Jane Goodall, one of the world's bravest and most eloquent environmental campaigners. Goodall reminded me how important it is to think positive, and why we can have hope that humans will solve their environmental problems.

Goodall is an expert on chimpanzees, and she has spent decades studying them in the forests of Africa.

Big top flop

I recently took my family to see the Moscow Circus thinking it would make an excellent outing for the kids, but was hopelessly disappointed.

Not only was the show expensive, at $230 a head, but parents even had to pay for infants in arms, which to me was ridiculous.

Nowhere else in the world do you pay for infants.

Can apes talk? When apes such as chimpanzees see food for example, they often make a lot of noises due to their excitement. This is thought to be an involuntary reaction controlled by the limbic region of the brain, such as when you touch something hot and scream out loud. Their noises might alert other apes to the fact that there is food available.

Natural habitats of primates under threat

Researchers cannot yet say exactly how cultural behaviours are transmitted among chimpanzees. They have only rarely observed examples of true teaching, when one ape, usually a parent, corrects the fumbling attempts of a young ape to do something like crack open a nut.
