Manchester United to 'engage' with mainland fan base.

Manchester United, the record 19-time English soccer champion, signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Hangzhou Wahaha Group, owned by China's richest man, Zong Qinghou.

The deal, the first for the club with a soft drinks maker in China, will let it "engage" with its fan base in the Asian nation where it has 108 million followers, Manchester United said on its website yesterday.

Tim Cook hopes to launch new Apple products in China first.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said China would overtake the United States to become its largest market, as the iPhone-maker adds more stores and considers debuting new products in the country.

"I believe it will become our first," Cook said in an interview with Xinhua on Thursday. No timeframe was given for the prediction.

Japan's top three carmakers said yesterday that sales in mainland China slumped last year as a consumer boycott sparked by a territorial row took a heavy toll.
