Asia's arms purchases are small relative to GDP

A big rise in defence spending by China's neighbours could easily be interpreted as an arms race to counter Beijing's military expansion. Photo: AFP

A big rise in defence spending by China's neighbours could easily be interpreted as an arms race to counter Beijing's military expansion. Increased tension over territorial disputes in the East and South China seas and along the frontier with India seemingly support such thinking. Add in the United States' renewed interest in Asia and the impression could readily be given of a region hurtling towards conflict, perhaps even war. The reality is anything but; while in some countries there are doubts and suspicions, what is taking place is modernisation, not sabre-rattling in readiness for hostilities.

China should focus on hi-tech weapons, not plodding old carriers

China should focus on hi-tech weapons, not plodding old carriers

Technology has a clever habit of outdoing fantasy, and this month the US Navy announced that it has finally produced a working Laser Weapon System (the US military has been trying to develop something like this for decades). After proving itself by shooting down target drones in 12 out of 12 tests, the laser will be on board an active US warship by next year, probably in the Persian Gulf, ready to zap Iranian missiles.

Gleanings from China's defence budget

It is revealed for the first time that the personnel size of the People's Liberation Army in total is nearly 1.5 million.

China's defence budgets and white papers usually prompt questions about transparency, which begs the question of how much foreign analysts already know about force disposition, strength, equipment and command. Nonetheless the perception of opacity is part of the background to a regional landscape which, in the words of China's latest defence white paper, is undergoing profound changes as the US adjusts its Asia-Pacific security strategy.

Why has the Chinese government, especially the People's Liberation Army, appeared more aggressive, self-confident and assertive in dealing with the US and its allies? The answer could lie in an ancient Chinese tactic called the "unrelenting strategy" - a part of the "36 stratagems" derived from the I Ching.

Seven reasons why claims of PLA hacking fail the test

Recently, a US company few of us had heard of gained instant fame for saying the People's Liberation Army was behind a lot of computer hacking. That may be. But the claims made by Mandiant should also be treated with caution, and not just because they have been vigorously denied.
