BYD and Geely record strong profit growth

BYD yesterday said net profit soared 579 per cent last year to 553.09 million yuan (HK$692.8 million) following improved performances in its car, phone components and battery businesses.

Turnover rose 12.1 per cent to 49.77 billion yuan.

Chinese carmaker Qoros Automotive brought its campaign to gain global credibility to the Geneva International Motor Show this week, showing off its second production car at a stand in prime real estate - between Maserati and Rolls-Royce.

PSA Peugeot Citroen’s founding family gave the go-ahead on Monday for a 3 billion euro (HK$31.9 billion) tie-up with China’s Dongfeng Motor that would draw a line under one of France’s oldest industrial dynasties, sources said.

A beefed-up vehicle warranty law that takes effect in China on Tuesday is unlikely to burden global carmakers but will likely raise costs for smaller local players that may add to pressure for eventual consolidation in the country’s fragmented car industry.

The decline in sales of domestic brands was marked. Mainland companies sold 570,120 cars in April, a market share of 39.62 per cent. Cui Dongshu, an analyst at the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), said on his blog that while the market for medium-priced and luxury cars would grow this year, the outlook for imported high-end vehicles and cheap sedans was dim.

The trend was on display yesterday at the start of the Shanghai car show, with carmakers such as Great Wall, Changan, and Beijing Auto - who typically price their cars at below 150,000 yuan (HK$186,500) - presenting new models at prices closer to the mid-range mark of 200,000 yuan.

Chinese brands seen making it globally in 10 years

Speaking at a conference on the eve of the Shanghai Auto Fair, the heads of Changan Automobile, Beijing Automotive, Dongfeng Motor and Guangzhou Automobile agreed increasing exports and their own brands' production capacity were two of their main tasks in the next seven years.
