Austerity! Austerity! Austerity! It's the word on everyone's lips at the moment, just like Disco! Disco! Disco! was circa 1976. I know which of those two words we all prefer, but it's hard to ignore the economic doom and gloom. The lesson we must all learn is to live within our means and tone down the brashness and the conspicuous consumption.

Ahead of the game

Amazingly, competitive eating is now a televisual event. I hesitate to call it a sport, as the idea of eating as many hotdogs or burgers as possible faster than a horde of ravenous competitors is, well, nutritionally questionable and athletically suspect.

Classy chronographs

Into the black

Fashion is just confusing. A quick flick through any men's magazine and one is inundated with the supposed hot new trends, this year's must-haves and the colour that will define the season. Fly boys

Let's not kid ourselves. Films this summer have ranged from mediocre to downright abysmal. Super 8? Middling. Thor? Pointless. Green Lantern? Abject. Transformers: Dark of the Moon? Possibly the worst film ever made. And guess what's coming next? The Footloose remake. I think I need a lie down.
