1869 On November 2, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, opens a two-storey City Hall on Queen's Road Central. It houses a library, a museum, a suite of assembly rooms and a 569-seat theatre, all built by private subscriptions.

1933 The government promises to earmark a new site for City Hall after demolishing a large part of the old hall to make way for bank buildings.

It's a celebration, let's dance

Hong Kong City Hall, one of Central's landmarks, celebrates its golden jubilee this year. As the city's first purpose-built cultural complex, the building has hosted numerous events over the past five decades, featuring well-known artists and fostering arts groups to witnessing the marriages of countless couples.

It's down memory lane for City Hall's golden jubilee

City Hall is turning 50. And for those who fancy a trip down memory lane it is staging an exhibition of more than 200 photographs taken at the building over the years.

Among those who have contributed a personal memento is renowned vocalist Barbara Fei Ming-yee, who spent many years performing at the complex.

Ben & Kitty celebrate each prized day together

Marketing consultants Ben Chan, 27, and Kitty Ng, 26, were married on April 29 at City Hall - the place where they officially became a couple in 2003. They celebrated the union with a banquet at the Harbourview Horizon Hotel for more than 300 guests.

'Every day we spend together is precious,' Kitty said. 'We'd been together for 2,715 days on the day we married.'

Sound, bites on music night

Organisers of the 2nd Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival held a gala cocktail reception at City Hall on July 7 to celebrate the event. The theme was Music in Nature and organisers Premiere Performances of Hong Kong presented a programme that juxtaposed works from the East and West, and classical and modern material.
