Fixed-line firms step up IDD war

Packages offer unlimited international calling for less than $40 per month

The days of paying by the minute for international direct dialling (IDD) calls look numbered. Both Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) and Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) yesterday offered a flat-rate, unlimited plan for less than $40 a month.

About a year ago DBC Vickers Securities said that all engines were fired up for growth at City Telecom and reiterated its 'buy' recommendation on the stock. The company had just announced that annual net profit surged 183 per cent to $258 million over 2002, which was 10 per cent more than expected.

A phone company has been given a written warning for a misleading advertising campaign that boasted its international direct dial (IDD) calls cost only a fraction of the rates charged by market leader PCCW.

Galaxy has estates in its sights for sales push

Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting is extending its network coverage to large housing estates and is confident of signing up more than 100 subscribers a day.

The loss-making pay-television venture of Television Broadcasts said it would soon start promotions at Heng Fa Chuen for the service. The area has 6,500 homes.

Three Hong Kong phone companies have been issued written warnings for trying to poach IDD customers from rivals with misleading advertising campaigns.

New World Telecom, EC Telecom and Hong Kong Broadband Network fell afoul of industry rules when they offered cut-price calls to the mainland and overseas for as little as 19 cents a minute.

Could it be that City Telecom (CTI) chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay wants to be a union leader? He certainly says all the right things. After announcing on Monday a 183 per cent rise in profit for CTI in the year to August, Mr Wong was asked whether that meant his employees would be getting bonuses.
