Transfers spark degree concerns

Concerns have been raised over the quality of associate degree programmes offered by a college affiliated to City University, which said it would transfer 112 of the college's staff.

Glimpse of modern Vietnam

A group of City University (CityU) students visited Vietnam last month to gain a better understanding of the former French colony's emerging economy.

The 22 students, from the department of East and Southeast Asian studies, went to Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh City during their 10-day trip.

Police and leftists from 1967 riots prepare to spar at seminar

Police officers who helped in suppressing the 1967 riots, and some leftists jailed during the bloody disturbances, will join academics for a City University seminar this weekend to mark the 40th anniversary of the political upheaval.

The two-day seminar, entitled 'May Days in Hong Kong: the 1967 Riots', is the first of its kind to be held in the city.

Award-winning film gets up close and personal

Language proved no barrier to a City University film student, whose Cantonese-language documentary has netted a top gong at a Beijing film festival.

Lo Chak-wing was awarded the Grand Adjudicator Award for a short digital film at the 14th Beijing Student Film Awards for Me, Mother, Grandmother, Father and DV, an intensely personal documentary.

University bids president farewell

More than 600 City University students, alumni, staff and members of the public bade farewell to outgoing president Chang Hsin-kang at a banquet at the InterContinental Hong Kong hotel last night. The veteran educator, who will retire tomorrow, was appointed president in May 1996 and oversaw the upgrading of the institution from a polytechnic.

Three face court over rent scam

Cheng Po-wah, 53, a senior lecturer at the Community College of City University, will appear in Kowloon City Court today to face a fraud charge for allegedly improperly obtaining HK$2.29 million in tenancy allowance from the university in a scam that involved another couple.
