Cheng hits hat-trick in Interport win

Late call-up Cheng Lai-hin scored a hat-trick as Hong Kong beat Macau 5-1 in the annual Interport Cup at Taipa Island. Cheng found the target three times in the first half after Macau went into an early lead. Lo Kwan-yee and second-half substitute Chan Ka-chun added to the tally in the second period.

Former HK coach Lai dies

Former Hong Kong coach Lai Sun-cheung passed away yesterday after a long struggle against lung cancer. He was 59. Lai was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Tai Po on Thursday for routine treatment but his condition deteriorated rapidly. Lai (pictured) was one of Hong Kong's best midfielders in the 1970s before turning to coaching.

Man admits chopper attack on neighbour

A 77-year-old Kwai Chung man admitted chopping his 87-year-old neighbour, permanently damaging his eye and arm, the Court of First Instance heard yesterday. Chan Ping-kuen pleaded guilty to one count of wounding Wong Kwo with intent on July 27 last year at Kwai Shing Estate. Chan suspected an affair between Wong and his wife as she often visited Wong to collect old newspapers.

Four charged with kidnapping manager

Two men and two women have been charged with kidnapping a restaurant manager. Lam Choi-ling, 40, and So Chun-kit, 19, both former staffers at the restaurant, current employee Poon Chi-ho, 35, and Yeung Siu-ying, 53, entered no plea at Sha Tin Court yesterday. They are accused of trying to abduct a 25-year-old man on March 8 for ransom.

Building work near haven has not affected butterflies, minister says

The government has taken issue with a green group's findings and says a construction site next to a butterfly reserve in Tai Po has not reduced butterfly numbers.

It has also declined requests by the green group to enlarge a buffer zone between the site, owned by Cheung Kong (Holdings), and the Fung Yuen butterfly reserve to 100 metres, saying 45 to 50 metres was appropriate.
