Well-known dissident arrested

Prominent dissident Liu Xiaobo, one of the most vocal advocates of political reform on the mainland, was officially arrested on suspicion of inciting subversion. Mr Liu was arrested on Tuesday, more than six months after police took him away a day before the release of Charter 08 on December 9 last year.

Clubs

Officialdom appears to be succeeding in its clampdown on club culture. With police launching regular raids on almost every club in town and officials stalling on licences for new venues, it seems the June slump in activity may last all summer. Club Ing has called a halt to dance parties after police frisked clubbers at a recent party.

Clothing clampdown

More than $6 million worth of clothing has been seized by Customs in a two-week clampdown on textile fraud during which 1,500 goods consignments and factories were inspected.

How about investigating under-staffing at airport?

I REFER to the article headlined, ''Kai Tak clampdown on late passengers'' (South China Morning Post, December 21).

I would be the first to agree that air passengers should arrive in plenty of time so that flights can leave on time and in turn avoid inconvenience to other passengers.

Extend clampdown to posters

I WOULD like to thank the Government for clamping down on nightclubs which displayed pictures of topless girls outside its premises.

I think it should extend this clampdown by stopping people from displaying posters on walls, which might cause offence.

I am particularly thinking of Category III film posters.
