Clint Eastwood and George Clooney add star power to White House race

Film legend Clint Eastwood claims that Hollywood's image as a Democratic bastion is exaggerated. But the evidence says otherwise, with big-hitters such as George Clooney leading an A-list cast for Barack Obama.

FILM (1966)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach Director: Sergio Leone

'Waa-aa-aa-aa-aaah! Wah wah wah.' It's an ugly score to an ugly movie, a soundtrack intro that is instantly recognisable, even if you've never sat through its epic three hours: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, possibly the greatest western of all time.

film focus

With the recent sterling record of Clint Eastwood (below) as a director grabbing deserved attention, it's worth remembering the great man was one of the most iconic actors of his - or any other - generation.

FYI: It didn't win Clint Eastwood much at the Oscars - what was so important about Iwo Jima anyway?

Iwo Jima is a barren, volcanic island dominated by the towering Mount Suribachi and located about 1,000km south of Tokyo. In 1945, it was described by US troops as 'seven square miles of useless real estate' but its strategic importance knew no bounds.

Battleground revisited

The slivers of metal catch the sunlight and move slightly in the breeze. Carter, L, Cpl has left one behind, hanging on its chain over the peeling white monument. So too have Chavez, K, Sgt, and Harmer, G, Pfc. Each of the dogtags may have a different name, rank and number, but all are punched with the letters USMC.

How the west was shown

1 In which western does Clint Eastwood paint a town red and rename it Hell?

2 Approximately how many blank rounds were discharged in the making of Sam Peckinpah's 1969 western The Wild Bunch: a) 30,000 b) 60,000 c) 90,000?

3 Who wrote the classic score for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly?

4 For which film did John Wayne win his only Oscar?

A subtle champion

Unlike Martin Scorsese's The Aviator that screams out for an Oscar with its flamboyance, Clint Eastwood's Oscar champion Million Dollar Baby is a subtle and moving picture.

Mystic River

Mystic River

Starring: Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden

Director: Clint Eastwood

The film: On reflection, there was never any doubt this production could be anything but a triumph? Great novel, fine script (Brian Helgeland, of L.A. Confidential fame), an occasionally great director, and a stupendous cast.

Gold crush

IF THE BOOKMAKERS are any guide, this year's Oscars race has been run and won for some time. In Britain, the bookies gave up their chase for punters' hard-earned, closing about five days before this morning's first envelope was even opened.
