CST sees no problem in raising cash to buy assets

Despite the weak stock market, China Sci-Tech Holdings is confident it will be able to raise US$1 billion to finance its purchase of two mining property assets.

'The indications we have had from investors are very positive,' Damon Barber, the company's recently appointed chief executive, said yesterday. 'I have no doubt we will raise this money.'

China copper producer will invest in 16 projects and boost its smelting capacity

Jiangxi Copper plans to spend nine billion yuan on 16 projects until 2008 that include expanding its smelting capacity by 75 per cent, developing mines and setting up a copper processing plant.

High metal prices fuel rise in Jiangxi Copper targets

Jiangxi Copper plans to expand its annual copper cathode production capacity to 450,000 tonnes next year to take advantage of higher metal prices.

The H share, which also has A shares listed, said it was targeting 400,000 to 420,000 tonnes of copper this year. Last year, it produced 343,000 tonnes.

Copper smelter lifts recovery

Jiangxi Copper has raised the recovery rate of gold and silver from its copper smelting process to boost revenues. The Guixi smelter, the mainland's largest copper smelter with an annual capacity of 140,000 tonnes, produced about 4 tonnes of gold and 42 tonnes of silver last year.

Copper's bright glow forecast to fade

Copper prices have confounded analysts' expectations by jumping smartly during the past month, but most experts are still bearish on the metal's longer-term outlook.

By last week, New York copper futures for May delivery had risen 14.4 per cent over the previous month, reaching a new high for the year of US$1.29 a pound.

CHILEAN copper giant Codelco has accused a trading house subsidiary of Metallgesellschaft of kickbacks, according to yesterday's European edition of the Wall Street Journal. Codelco filed a lawsuit in Florida last month alleging Metallgesellschaft Corp, the American subsidiary of the German metallurgy outfit, deposited US$1.5 million in the Cayman Islands bank account of Juan Pablo Davila.
