China buys majority stake in grain trader Nidera: reports

China’s state-owned grain trader has acquired a majority stake in Dutch trader Nidera, ending weeks of speculation over the deal, Argentinian media reported on Wednesday.

Two shareholders of China Mengniu Dairy, the biggest producer of liquid milk on the mainland, are raising HK$1.22 billion in a share placement. Jinniu Milk Industry and Yinniu Milk Industry - majority owned by Mengniu's top management, including chairman Niu Gensheng, who stepped down as chief executive this year - are selling 50.70 million shares at HK$23.75 to HK$24.15 each.

China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (Cofco) has been the bridge between the country and the world for trading agricultural products since the 1950s.

State-owned companies, such as Cofco, are often charged with pioneering new industries, like biofuel, until the sector is developed, at which point it is opened to other players.

Food packaging firm CPMC up 13pc on debut

Shares of food packaging firm CPMC Holdings, which raised HK$1.08 billion in an initial public offering, closed 13.4 per cent higher in their trading debut yesterday.

CPMC, a subsidiary of Cofco Group, opened at HK$6.90 and went as high as HK$7.05 before closing at HK$6.11. The shares were offered at HK$5.39.

Suitors woo Huiyuan after Coke flop

China Huiyuan Juice Group says it has been approached by more investors after Beijing blocked Coca-Cola's HK$19.65 billion takeover of the mainland's biggest pure juice maker.

'After the failed deal, we've met more suitors, although we have not reached the stage of planning a marriage,' said chairman Zhu Xinli.

China Agri sets sight on overseas grain producers as prices surge

China Agri-Industries Holdings, a Hong Kong-listed unit of the mainland's largest food importer and exporter, is seeking overseas acquisitions to secure supply lines of grain as commodity prices continue to surge worldwide.

'The surging prices of grain globally are the catalyst for us to adopt such a strategy,' China Agri vice-president Andy Li said in an interview.

New plant for China Packaging

China Packaging, a mainland food and beverage packager, plans to spend 300 million yuan this year on a new plant to capitalise on fast-growing consumption.

It will set up its fourth plant in Chengdu, Sichuan, with an annual production capacity of 500 million cans, bringing the packager's total capacity to 1.6 billion cans by April.
