Coins of the Hong Kong Dollar

Letters to the Editor, October 14, 2012

Insight on Diaoyus from both sides

I refer to Minnie Chan's article "Rules of diplomatic game broken" (September 29) in the context of Teddy Ng's article "Japan's PM calls for meeting over Diaoyu dispute" (October 12).

$1,000 coin

A $1,000 coin has been struck to commemorate the opening of the new airport. The Government gazetted the 22-carat design, which shows the Chek Lap Kok runway on one side and the bauhinia on the other.

HK dollar deposits fall 25pc on reforms in interest rates

HONG KONG dollar demand deposits fell almost 25 per cent in the year to January, but time deposits rose 18 per cent over the same period, possibly due to deregulation of the interest rate agreement.

According to Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) figures released yesterday, Hong Kong dollar demand deposits stood at $93.16 billion on January 31, down 23 per cent on the year.

Lighten load

ALLOW me to offer one suggestion to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in re-designing the Bauhinia $1 coin. Make the coin smaller and lighter.

Relative to their value, Hong Kong coins are too cumbersome.

Just compare Hong Kong coins with coins of equivalent value in Canada, Singapore, or similar coins in the US currency.

Coins are so boring

REGARDING your front page story on December 23 on the proof $10 coins being sold for charity, may I ask the question who designed and approved the new coinage for Hong Kong, and why was there no public consultation? The new bauhinia flower coins are the most boring coinage issue I have ever seen, they look exactly like the plastic play money you get in toy sets.
