Imported ice creams fail food safety tests

Ten samples of new ice-cream products imported from Singapore were found to contain excessive bacteria before they went on the market, the Centre for Food Safety said yesterday.

Bacteria in ice-cream

Four samples of soft ice-cream taken from convenience store Circle K have been found to contain excessive levels of bacteria, including the faecal coliform genus.

The Centre for Food Safety said the tainted products were among 1,100 samples of ice-cream it gathered from factories, supermarkets and restaurants to check levels of bacteria and other disease-causing agents.

Dongjiang E.coli rises 83pc

The amount of E.coli found in water supplied to Hong Kong from the Dongjiang has risen by 83 per cent in the year to March, according to monitoring data released yesterday.

But the Water Supplies Department insists the water is safe for consumption after treatment to remove traces of the bacteria, which can cause intestinal disease.

I REFER to an article by Peter Woolrich (Sunday Morning Post, November 28), under the headline ''Hygiene questioned as stomach bug grips luxury flats'' and which contained various statements suggesting the water supply to Parkview was the origin of this complaint.
