Film review: Lost in Thailand

Lost in Thailand

On the face of it, Lost in Thailand is a modest comic road movie by first-time director Xu Zheng, who also stars in, wrote and produced the film. (To make it even more of a family affair, Xu's wife in the film is played by his real-life spouse, Tao Hong.) But it's hard to ignore the hype surrounding this unabashed crowd-pleaser in view of the more than 38 million people who have seen it since its release in China last month, making it the most viewed film ever on the mainland.

Flaming groovy

Ed Macfarlane was with friends from the band Foals at a London restaurant the other day when he was recognised by a fellow diner. The Friendly Fires frontman was rather chuffed - not least because his perhaps-better-known mates went unnoticed. 'I had a very smug look on my face.

Comedy, much like any other form of entertainment, goes through fads and fashions. The trend in Britain lately has been 'edgy' comedy: stand-up that scares and titillates the audience by pushing the boundaries of decency. Russell Brand and Frankie Boyle have done very well out of it.

Imitation not always flattering

With a backdrop of blinding white snow and a quirky gore-filled murder plot, The Big White is a mediocre attempt to recreate the success of the Coen Brothers' classic Fargo.
