Sick director avoids jail for contempt

A company director narrowly avoided jail for contempt of court yesterday when a judge took pity on him because of his poor health.

Chi Shi-jer, a director of Datacom Wire & Cable Co Ltd, was fined $50,000 and ordered to pay the costs of committal proceedings for having exported some of his debt-ridden company's frozen assets.

Apple Daily fined $7,000

Apple Daily was fined $7,000 for a report and picture on committal proceedings. Magistrate John Brennan said the media should not prejudge the accused and ordered the paper to pay $5,000 costs.

PLANS to let frightened or vulnerable witnesses be interviewed via courtroom television links moved a step closer yesterday when the new rules were gazetted.

The proposals introduce four new ways to let witnesses give evidence free from intimidation and to allay the trauma and anxiety of testifying.
