I was wrong, badly wrong. Back in February this column looked at the prospects for commodity markets in 2013. With prices down, and major mining companies announcing losses, I examined the arguments that prices had further to fall.

Commodity prices rose sharply yesterday, with fears of Middle East instability and the threat of inflation pushing oil and gold to historical highs as the US dollar continued to weaken.

The US dollar plumbed new depths against the euro at around US$1.44 on expectations the US Federal Reserve will pare another 25 basis points off interest rates this week.

Start of trade

An investment group yesterday set up a commodity exchange that began trading spot contracts in metals, construction materials and agricultural products.
